The reversible glue, developed by experts from Newcastle University’s School of Engineering, is a water-based emulsion – a paint – that bonds together and can be separated by water that is either acidic or alkaline. The glue uses polymers that contain electrical charge to both keep the emulsion stable and to stick to different Now that it’s available pre-mixed you don’t have to heat and mix it in your glue pot. In the mean time I suggest using protein glues which are available, since they are still superior to synthetic glues in all cases of woodworking. They just take some experience to get used to. Old brown glue is a 192 gram strength high quality traditional hide glue or scotch glue, but in a more convenient format that doesn’t require a glue pot. Just stand the bottle in hot tap water for a few minutes until the glue becomes runny and then use it as you would any other glue – but with plenty of open time, easy cleanup and no worries about it showing through your finish.
