In February 2024, the government announced a historic expansion of the surface combatant fleet—the destroyers and frigates of the Royal Australian Navy equipped with offensive and defensive weapons including missiles and torpedoes. The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) fleet is made up of 34 commissioned warships and 12 non-commissioned as of June 2025, with the non-commissioned vessels using the prefix of ADV (Australian Defence Vessel).
