This trail is a back-door hike to Annapolis Rock taking the lesser traveled Thurston Griggs Trail that avoids the crowded AT section between I-70 and Annapolis Rock. Although slightly longer, taking the Appalachian Trail south is a more scenic experience that includes the incredible views from Black Rock Cliff.
Annapolis Rock to Black Rock then to Washington Monument. It was a great day! We did see someone carry his dog off the trail because he was bit by a copperhead. Hope his dog is ok.

I was initially going to do this hike from Washington Monument State Park, but felt I should probably try it first from the AT Trailhead on US40, where the AT crosses over Interstate 70. Look for the Washington monument. It’s near the Appalachian trail in Middletown Maryland. The Annapolis rock trail is near that. This section of the AT starts from a trailhead along Route 40/Baltimore National Pike. The first mile is uphill and then the terrain begins to level off. There are great views from Annapolis Rocks and Black Rock. There is also a shelter and a designated tent camping area along the way for backpackers to stay at.
The Washington Monument offers a well-maintained trail suitable for families and picnics. The hike up the hill may be slippery and muddy, however, it is not too strenuous. The monument holds significant historical value and provides scenic views from the top. Keep your eyes peeled for the flora and fauna that inhabit this area.
