From their first appearance in 1967, when the United Nations Commission on Human Rights established an Ad Hoc Working Group to inquire into the situation of human rights in southern Africa, the Special Procedures system has developed into one of the international community’s most important tools for promoting and protecting human rights. Marc Limon is Executive Director of the Universal Rights Group (URG), a think tank focused on international human rights policy, with offices Geneva, New York, Nairobi and Bogotá. Prior to founding the URG in 2013, Marc Limon worked as a diplomat at the UN Human Rights Council from the body’s establishment in 2006 until the end of 2012.
