This essay expresses some of the author’s concerns regarding the ethos and direction of the „new institutionalism.“ While recognizing the latter’s valuable insights and perspectives, he questions the wisdom of drawing a sharp line between the „old“ and the „new,“ especially because doing so inhibits the contribution of institutional theory to major issues of bureaucracy and social policy.
It suggests that four variants of institutionalism (historical, new economic, normative, and billiard ball) are each systematically most appropriate to examine the issues in the policy domains of redistribution, regulation, modernization, and liberalization, respectively.

Originality/value The authors use the insights from new institutionalism to illustrate how a particular social theory can fit into the larger theoretical framework for AI in organizations. The authors also formulate four broad research questions to guide researchers interested in studying the institutional significance of AI. The institutionalisms considered herein are all “new” institutionalisms, in contrast to the “old” institutionalism that had formed the core of early political science studies of the formal institutions of government. Among the many neo-institutionalisms that have been identified by scholars, four stand out. While the insights offered by contemporary organizational theorists have provided important keys to understanding how organizations, especially economic organizations, adapt to pressures within their environments, the authors argue that the Old Institutionalisms of functional theorizing has much to offer the New Institutionalisms.
