Salmon And Sea Trout Populations And Rivers In Sweden

Amongst sea-migrant adult fish, Youngson et al., (1992) recorded a single returning Atlantic salmon x brown trout hybrid, from the River Don, Scotland in a sample from the recreational fishery. We recently commissioned the Esk Rivers & Fisheries Trust to determine the current state of juvenile salmon and freshwater invertebrate populations (their food source) at Glen Prosen. Early research is showing that river restoration in the area should benefit fish habitat and numbers over time. At the same time, in certain areas positive development has been witnessed following increased emphasis and better management practices of sea trout populations and their rivers.

At the higher altitudes char and permanent trout dominate, while farther down you find migrating brown trout and perch. A long line of alpine rivers empty into the Baltic Sea and all along their waters there is salmon, trout and grayling. Throughout the forest the rivers and lakes are home to many fish such as pike and perch.

The Torne River flows through the unspoiled landscapes of northern Sweden, offering exceptional fishing for robust salmon and sea trout. The prime fishing season occurs during the summer months, from June to August. The best times to fish in Sweden are from April and September for arctic char, Atlantic salmon, Baltic salmon, brown trout, cod, rainbow trout, European perch, mackerel, northern pike, zander, and other species. Sweden is well-known for its incredible fisheries. There are many lakes and rivers in the region.

132 In the Baltic Sea, sea trout together with Atlantic salmon, European eel, and migratory whitefish 133 constitute keystone diadromous species, but sea trout inhabit a much larger number of rivers and 134 streams than salmon for instance (ICES 2020). The Marine Institute Year in Review 2023 includes a comprehensive count of wild salmon and sea trout for 2023 and demonstrates a declining and unstable population of wild salmon and dramatic population collapse of sea trout. The data covering the period 2019 to 2023 demonstrates a declining trend of survival at sea for wild salmon []

Freshwater migratory fish populations have declined by 81% from 1970 to 2020, according to the 2024 Living Planet Index published by WWF in May 2024. Unfortunately, this comes as no surprise, with Atlantic salmon and now sea trout populations understood to be in decline. This blog post from

Section 2 of the report covers catches and other data on salmon in the sea, and summarizes in-formation affecting the fisheries and management of salmon. Section 3 reviews data from salmon spawning rivers, stocking statistics and health issues. Status of salmon stocks in the Baltic Sea is evaluated in Section 4. The same section also covers methodological issues of assessment as HELCOM assessment of salmon (Salmo salar) and sea trout (Salmo trutta) populations and habitats in rivers fl owing to the Baltic Sea. We use a long time series of catch abundance from a recreational fishery over 116 years to look for population trends in Atlantic salmon, and anadromous (sea trout) and non-anadromous (brown) trout for a single catchment, Loch Lomond, west central Scotland. Year strongly predicted variation in catches but catch effort did not meaningfully increase explained

Salmon and sea trout populations and rivers in the Baltic Sea: HELCOM assessment of salmon (Salmo salar) and sea trout (Salmo trutta) populations and habitats in rivers flowing to the Baltic Sea Severely dry conditions during the winter of 2013-2014 blocked some species of salmon and steelhead trout from accessing their breeding grounds, wiping out the populations of individual tributaries and even entire watersheds.

Still, there are some exceptions – southern Sweden owns two of the best salmon and brown trout rivers in the country, namely the Mörrumså and the Emån. Background Atlantic salmon live in fresh water as juveniles before migrating to sea to undertake long migrations to their oceanic feeding grounds in the North Atlantic. As adults they return to the rivers in which they grew up where they then spawn and begin the next generation. Scotland’s native trout populations are more varied and after initial growth in rivers can either remain there

In Sweden, there are three main populations of salmon: Baltic salmon, Atlantic salmon and Vänerlax (Gullspångslax). Salmon stocks have been severely affected by hydropower development From river to sea Salmon spawn in rivers and larger streams with suitable conditions. After hatching, they spend their first years as fry (young fish) in the river. It is crossed by a number of alpine rivers that empty into the gulf and up which both salmon and sea trout run. Some of the better known salmon waters are the Torneälven, Kalixälven, Kaitumälven, Byskeälven and Lödgeälven Rivers. Basically both fishes run up all rivers in northern Sweden, differing only in how high they go.

European status and distribution The Atlantic salmon Salmo salar is widely distributed within the EU, ranging from Portugal in the south to Sweden and Finland in the north. The UK salmon population comprises a significant proportion of the total European stock. Scottish rivers in particular are a European stronghold for the species. An understanding of when and where sea trout Salmo trutta L. are located at sea is essential to the effective management of local populations and in evaluating their vulnerability to salmon lice and other anthropogenic threats. Here we review the available literature on sea trout life-history strategies, behaviour and habitat use in the marine environment, including feeding,
