In this article we reassess conceptions of the welfare state with an eye towards the limits of current scholarly approaches. Summary Voices from the Margins explores the particular emphasis that women writers of Troubles short fiction have placed on gender and the everyday, two areas which have often been relegated to the margins of the «official story» about the Northern Irish conflict and peace process. In the west such a perspective is not infrequently relegated to the margins. Writers including Rahman and Shamsie have cogitated upon the nexus of religion and culture beneath Islam, which, almost inevitably, connects with clashing perspectives on ‘narratives’ of east/west power relations. Out of the Margin is the first volume to consider feminist concerns across the entire domain of economics. The book addresses the philosophical roots of ‚rational economic man‘, power relations and conflicts of interest within the family, the limitations of relying on secondary data and the policy implications of neo-classical models.
These accessible outputs will contextualise larger policy and economic trends in deeper histories and socio-political dynamics of conflict. Thus, beneficiaries gain new understandings and a better grasp of ‚vernacular‘ perspectives and the complexities at play in conflict settings.
