The Hubble Space Telescope, a joint ESA and NASA project, has made some of the most dramatic discoveries in the history of astronomy. From its vantage point 600 km above the Earth, Hubble can detect light with ‚eyes‘ 5 times sharper than the best ground-based telescopes and looks deep into space where some of the most profound mysteries are

For 35 years, the Hubble Space Telescope has orbited above Earth’s atmosphere, teaching us more than we ever imagined we could know about our universe and place within it. In addition to Hubble’s extraordinary scientific value, its transformative views of space continue to inspire and shape how we think about the cosmos. In celebration of this benchmark
Hubble’s launch and deployment in April 1990 marked the most significant advance in astronomy since Galileo’s telescope. Thanks to five servicing missions an
Hubble’s domain extends from the ultraviolet through the visible (which our eyes see) and into the near-infrared. This range has allowed The Hubble Space Telescope, the most celebrated observatory in history, is officially 35 years old. To mark the milestone, NASA has released a fresh gallery of images spanning our solar system and well beyond – from Mars’s ruddy surface to star-forming nebulae and a neighboring galaxy.
Hubble: The telescope that changed our view of the universe
The crew of the U.S. space shuttle Discovery places the Hubble Space Telescope, a long-term space-based observatory, into a low orbit around Earth. Our World in Data is a project of Global Change Data Lab, a nonprofit based in the UK (Reg. Charity No. 1186433). Our charts, articles, and data are licensed under CC BY, unless stated otherwise.
The Hubble Space Telescope takes its name from Edwin Hubble, an American astronomer whose observations helped broaden scientists’ view of the universe to include galaxies other than our own

- History: How Hubble Came About
History In 1925, American astronomer Edwin Hubble demonstrated to the scientific community that there was more in the universe than the Milky Way, and that there were many groups of stars that were separated from our world. Then, in 1929, Hubble announced a new discovery that completely changed astronomy. In the 1920s, astronomers thought that the Milky Way was the entire universe. Hubble’s discovery revealed a much bigger cosmos. Hubble showed that the universe was much larger than our own galaxy. Today, we know that the universe contains about a hundred billion galaxies, about the same number of galaxies as there are stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. After discovering that there are galaxies beyond the Milky Way, Edwin Hubble went on to measure the distance to hundreds of other galaxies. His data would
Over a decade’s worth of NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope data was used to re-examine the long-held prediction that the Milky Way galaxy will collide with the Andromeda galaxy in about 4.5 billion years. The astronomers found that, based on the latest observational data from Hubble as well as the Gaia space telescope, there is only a 50-50 chance of the two galaxies colliding About Us The Hubble Space Telescope is a project of international co-operation between NASA and the European Space Agency. You can find out more about the Hubble project in the About Hubble pages of this website. The main scientific office for Hubble is located at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, USA, though the telescope is used by scientists Because Hubble is exposed to extreme temperatures in space, NASA scientists had to find a way to protect the telescope from the harsh
The World With Hubble For over three decades, Hubble has been a part of our lives. It’s hard to imagine a time when we didn’t have the telescope’s images to guide our imaginations through the cosmos. Ever since the telescope rocketed to the forefront of astronomical discovery with the dramatic mission to correct its blurred vision, Hubble and its
1929 – The American astronomer Hubble established that some nebulae (fuzzy patches of light on the night sky) were indeed distant galaxies comparable in size to our own Milky Way. Hubble discovers the red shift with distance. If Doppler shift caused this redshift then it meant stars / galaxies were moving apart.

The invention of the telescope in 1608 is usually credited to the Dutchman Hans Lippershey. The astronomical telescope became one of the most important of all instruments during the Scientific Revolution Edwin Hubble was an American astronomer whose discoveries fundamentally changed our understanding of the universe. Early Life and Education Birth: Edwin Powell Hubble was born on November 20, 1889, in Marshfield, Missouri, USA. Education: Hubble attended the University of Chicago, where he studied mathematics and astronomy, graduating in 1910. He On April 24, 1990, a Space Shuttle Discovery mission designated STS-31 changed the course of modern astronomy. From low Earth orbit, it deployed one of the most ambitious scientific instruments ever built: the Hubble Space Telescope. Decades in the making and plagued by delays and budget overruns, Hubble’s launch marked a triumph for NASA, the
The Hubble Space Telescope (HST or Hubble) is a space telescope that was launched into low Earth orbit in 1990 and remains in operation. It was not the first space telescope, but it is one of the largest and most versatile, renowned as a vital research tool and as a public relations boon for astronomy. The Hubble Space Telescope is named after astronomer Edwin Hubble and is one
Hier sollte eine Beschreibung angezeigt werden, diese Seite lässt dies jedoch nicht zu. Hubble’s 1929 paper, which was accompanied by one by Milton Humason reporting a velocity larger than any of Slipher’s, is generally regarded as marking the discovery of the expansion of the Universe. Hubble found a slope to the linear velocity–distance correlation of about 536 km/s/Mpc, later adjusting this up and down to 550 and 526 km/s/Mpc.
Edwin Hubble changed the way we thought of the Universe forever. When scientists decided to name the Hubble Space Telescope after him, they could not have made a more appropriate choice. The history of the Hubble Space Telescope, facts about its construction, and a guide to how it has revolutionised our view of the Universe over the last 30 years.

Hubble has shown us that we are part of a vast, beautiful, and mysterious universe. It has expanded our horizons and deepened our sense of History: How Hubble Came About The Earth’s atmosphere is the bane of astronomers. The idea of sending a telescope into space to avoid it was first
Hubble Space Telescope, the first sophisticated optical observatory placed into Earth’s orbit. Some of its many triumphs included the Hubble Deep Field, a photograph of about 1,500 galaxies revealing galactic evolution, and the discoveries of Hydra and Nix, small moons orbiting the dwarf planet Pluto. Hubble also detects an object in the Kuiper belt at the edge of our Solar System which is larger than Pluto [8]. This discovery leads to a debate on Pluto’s status as a planet.
