The classic Weaving period was during 1680’s to 1800’s in which the original Navajo weavings were woven using hand spun Navajo-Churro Wool. This accounted for the long wearing and luster on the finished product. The 3rd Phase Chief wearing blanket, which was a culmination of designs from the 1st and 2 phases, was made of 100 % Navajo-Churro wool.

HISTORY: NAVAJO-CHURRO, NORTH AMERICA’S FIRST DOMESTIC SHEEP The Navajo-Churro endured, and, along the way, became a symbol of the endurance of the Navajo people and the spirit of the Southwest.

Navajo-Churro Sheep Navajo-Churro sheep are considered the first domestic sheep breed developed in North America. They can have two, four, or even up to six horns, and have double coated fleece (a finer inner layer and courser outer layer) that can be spun directly from the raw fleece, without washing or carding. The expressions “Navajo Churro,“ „Original” or “Old Type Churro,“ and “Churro sheep” all denote the same landrace breed. We intend to adopt the term “Churro sheep,” a comprehensive label historically utilized by Southwest cultures, to honor the various groups instrumental in the rich history and evolution of Churro sheep in the WHOLE Navajo-Churro is regarded by many chefs as the most desirable breed when it comes to lamb or mutton. It is also the only gourmet lamb meat recognized by Slow Food USA. The unusually low lanolin levels translate to an excellent „sweet“ taste, compared to commercial breeds.
