6 IOM and Social Inquiry, Migration into a Fragile Setting: Responding to Climate-Induced Informal Urbanization and Inequality in Basra, Iraq (Baghdad: IOM, 2021). It is challenging to predict the complexity and scope of the climate-induced migration problem, not least because to the numerous factors that contribute to the migration (Rahman, Mia, Ford The WRMC seeks to engage the climate-induced migration issue at a practical level by leading an effort for a workable, politically saleable, and rights-regarding action plan that focuses squarely on the external migration component of responding to climate change.

Each fact sheet in the series was written using information from peer-reviewed academic papers, government publications, and other documentation from international non-governmental organizations.
But migration generates grave socioeconomic consequences. Through case study analysis from 12 regions in Asia, Africa and the Pacific, this paper explores how climate change-induced migration is creating physical health, mental health and wellbeing issues — both for migrants and the families they leave behind. This paper provides a welcome addition to the literature in that it lists the causes and implications of climate-induced migration and, by doing so, fosters a better understanding of the current crisis and its implications. The implications of this paper to the overall knowledge of climate change and migration are twofold.

Categorization of respondents by time living in Basra – „MIGRATION INTO A FRAGILE SETTING: RESPONDING TO CLIMATE-INDUCED INFORMAL URBANIZATION AND INEQUALITY IN BASRA, IRAQ“ The international community should support the Iraqi government in strengthening its capacity to address and manage climate-induced mobility and displacement, including rural–urban migration. Mechanisms should be put in place to improve public service provision, especially in cities with large populations of displaced persons and migrants, while also building resilience in climate Climate risk and human mobility Most commentators adopt a risk-centric approach to the issues in climate-induced migration and displacement. Essentially, this means understanding human mobility as a response to the risks associated with climate change and extreme weather (as opposed to, for example, a human rights issue or adopting a people-centered approach). Climate-induced migration may be triggered by a slow erosion of a community’s or individual’s resilience or a dramatic event that fractures resilience. Climate migration maybe manifested as forced displacement, economic migration, regular and irregular international or internal migration, circular migration, temporary migration and more. As a multi causal phenomenon, climate The World Refugee & Migration Council (WRMC) believes that a thoughtful, coordinated approach can minimize the risk of political and social disruption, support the states that will receive climate migrants, and protect the dignity of those displaced. By planning ahead and implementing proactive solutions, states can turn the complex challenge of climate-induced transnational
The importance of local institutions in climate adaptation and resilience building, and the institutional arrangements, legislations and regulatory framework relating to climate change in Somalia are also assessed, followed by international climate agreements in climate adaptation and mitigation of relevance to Somalia. Climate change adaptation is integrated into the IOM Strategic Plan 2024–2028 through a focus on implementing humanitarian operations, building community resilience and addressing climate-induced displacement. IOM invests in disaster risk reduction and local adaptation strategies, developing solutions through evidence, policy and operational engagement to leverage
The need for scaled-up climate action in fragile and conflict settings is by now a well-recognised part of the global climate agenda. Yet uncertainty about working in difficult environments, and persistent knowledge gaps, hamper the development of effective climate adaptation plans.

Climate-induced stressors often trigger migration through indirect pathways in fluenced by multiple intervening institutional, political, and socio-economic factors and programmatic and policy gaps.
Executive Summary As the scale and costs of climate change and envi-ronmental disasters grow, so do their impacts on migration and displacement. Exactly how climate change can trigger human mobility is complex, as a growing body of evidence shows, but failing to anticipate and prepare for climate mobility comes with high costs. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has a proven history of developing and implementing interventions that support communities and governments to prepare for, reduce the risks of, and respond to the effects of climate change, environmental degradation and disasters. Such interventions fall within the Migration, Environment and Climate Change (MECC) This article delves into the complex relationship between climate change, migration patterns, and health outcomes in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). While the severe impact of climate change on health in LAC is widely acknowledged, the article sheds light on the often-overlooked multiple effects on migration and the well-being of migrants.
