Hank Thomas: My First Arrest In Oral History on April 18, 2008, tagged childhood, sit-ins with 6 comments Like several black Freedom Riders who grew up in the south, Hank Thomas began protesting the status quo as a child. Hank Willis Thomas: This project began with an e-mail that was forwarded to me that showed sexist advertising. You might have sent it to me. I was fascinated by the level of violence in these ads that featured primarily, or exclusively white women from around the 1930’s, 40’s, 50s and 60s.
