The daredevil aviator in Maggie Shipstead’s new novel was inspired by Amelia Earhart. Shipstead says she wants to investigate the difference between death and a disappearance like Earhart’s. Shipstead begins the story with a prelude in three parts. The novel opens with a philosophical description of what a “great circle” is, explaining how “points directly opposite each otherare intersected by an infinite number of great circles” (3).
