Global Production Networks: Design And Operation
Di: Ava
Abstract The management of global production networks is exposed to special challenges due to global turbulences caused by economic, political and technological influences and requires dealing with a high degree of complexity. Due to the current business environment, a systematic transformation of global production networks is necessary.
The Global Production Network (GPN) 2.0 analytical framework addresses parts of the criticism of the operational limitations of the original GPN analytical framework (GPN 1.0) by proposing clearer operational guidance to unpack the specific relationships between the market environment and four actor-specific strategies adopted by lead firms and their suppliers. Due to She places a special focus on data-driven planning and control of production networks in order to translate corporate strategy into tactical and operative network design.
Global operations strategy: Coordinating manufacturing networks
The increasing need for personalized products, in combination with the volatile market demand, affect industries toward the design of global production networks (GPNs). Manufacturers and service providers are called to develop, plan, and operate GPNs in order to tackle decreased life cycles and increased product complexity. STC O, 68/2/2019, P.823 Keywords: Production, Network, Global Production Abstract : Industrial companies are nowadays acting in global production networks (GPNs). A comprehensive scientific overview of those networks is still missing. To close this gap, a framework for designing and operating GPNs is introduced. The global production network (GPN) framework has been developed in economic geography and cognate disciplines since the turn of the century as a heuristic device and more recently a theoretical approach to better understand and analyze these processes and their implications for regional socioeconomic development.
For cost calculation the web tool “OptiWo” is used, providing the needed detail level of the production network configuration. Combining the area of tension of risk and cost, the coherence between these two dimensions of global footprint design decisions can be identified.
Design and Operation of Production Networks for Mass Personalization in the Era of Cloud Technology draws on the latest industry advances to provide everything needed for the effective implementation of this powerful tool. In addition to a literature review on manufacturing networks and global operations and the proposed conceptual model, the paper also contains a case illustration showing how Ericsson has implemented a version of the conceptual model so that their global operations strategy realizes the transnational solution. Abstract The design of global production networks influences the ecological sustainability of manufacturing operations, since it determines the environment with which a production process interacts. Historically sustainability has not been a primary goal for the design of production networks and its evaluation remains a challenge. The multiple goals of sustainability and

Companies operating in global production networks should handle the complex, uncertain, and volatile environment, making them more vulnerable to disruptions. The Mass Personalization (MPe) paradigm is already a reality and has increased the involvement of end-users in the product lifecycle. It requires responsive and flexible manufacturing operations to While network design describes the definition of the strategic orientation and the network structure, network operation comprises the planning, execution, and success control of operational tasks in production. Abstract In our dynamic global markets, an optimal configuration of global production networks can lead to significant competitive advantages. Thus, managers face the challenge to consider a multitude of influence factors and interdependencies when designing production networks. In this contribution, we explain how a digital twin can support managerial decision-making processes
Transformation globaler Produktionsnetzwerke
This article illustrates challenges in the management of global production networks on strategic, tactical and operational level. It demonstrates approaches, which enable a best possible dealing with these challenges on each planning level. Decision factors in production network configuration Global production networks of industrial companies have evol-ved over decades as a result of a variety of strategic motives. These motives can be both clearly quantifiable and of a more qualitative nature, such as access to skilled labour and to com-petences. Thus, the question arises which decision factors for evaluating,
Abstract Industrial companies are nowadays acting in global production networks (GPNs). A comprehensive scientific overview of those networks is still missing. To close this gap, a framework for designing and operating GPNs is introduced. It structures influencing factors, challenges, enablers and outlines the need for decision support systems. The state of the art in Abstract This paper develops an empirically-grounded typology of global production networks based on their capability profiles, which allows for the identification of managerial steps to improve a production network’s performance. Clustering our survey data on network capabilities, we find five distinct types of networks: (1) externally focused networks, (2) These complex structures ensure competitive advantages and thus the corporate and production strategy. The implications of sustainability requirements increase this complexity, with conflicting goals and adapted network structures in particular changing the
In this article, a KPI network for global production networks is presented, which links the key figures of the site level and the corporate level. The objective of this paper is to construct and apply a model to evaluate the expected performance impact with respect to capital and operational expenses of reconfigurable designs of production systems within a global production network.
Abstract The configuration of global production networks is a highly complex management task. It involves decisions likesite selection, site specialization, and long-term investments. Entering new markets, securing resource access and realizing cost advantages are only examples for the vast variety of strategic motives overlapping in these decisions. However, current material

Challenges arise as companies increasingly operate in a so-called VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity) world [1]. This leads to the necessity of a planning approach to support network planners in designing an efficient comprehensive value stream within the

An increasingly uncertain, customer-centric, and dynamic environment nowadays challenges manufacturing companies on a global scale. To handle this challenge, enterprises are distributing their production in global production networks. To deal with the growing demand for individualization, companies need to diversify their product portfolio. This leads to a growing
To make production networks capable to change in the long term, influencing factors and their effect on the network design must be considered. The combination of influencing factors with consideration of uncertainty still needs further research in Abstract The design of global production networks influences the ecological sustainability of manufacturing operations, since it determines the environment with which a production process interacts. Historically sustainability has not been a primary goal for the design of production networks and its evaluation remains a challenge. The text also outlines the GlobOpe (Global Operations) framework and roadmap that outlines a logical path to identifying sources of competitiveness when designing and managing Global Production Networks.
