The earliest examples of art in New Guinea are thought to have appeared around 1500 BCE in the form of early Oceanic rock sculptures, found mainly in the highlands. The region is most famously known today for its elaborate wood carvings, including sculptures, masks, canoes, drums, and storyboards. I recently visited the Papua New Guinea Sculpture Garden in Stanford. This was my first time visiting this attraction and I had a good time. The sculpture garden features the works of 10 Papua New Guinea artists who visited the campus in 1994. The master carvers ranging in age from 27 to 73 had never been to the United States prior to the onset of the project and How 10 artists-in-residence from the Sepik River region worked with architects to create an iconic public art environment. The best known New Guinea Sculpture come from the Sepik River but there are numerous different types of sculpture throughout New Guinea.
