This generation of Gamabato Sport is an ‚inexpensive‘, functional, spot-welded, pressed steel, object that can only be described as crude and ugly. It shares a lot of design features with a Spanish derailleur called the Triplex Sport – which dates from 1974. As with most of my Gambato derailleurs, I have not real evidence for dates.

This is a beautiful derailleur. Here’s why I love it: It is a clear derivative of the, very tidy, Gian Robert Competition (or perhaps the Argentine Gian Robert Competicion). The lettering on the outer parallelogram plate has a pleasant Art-Deco look. And then there are the ‚arabesque‘ flourishes – which are a pure steal from the famous Shimano 600 EX Arabesque. The development of the 1951 Campagnolo Gran Sport, establishing the parallelogram derailleur as the high-end technology of the future. In the period 1951 to 1982 inclusive, Campagnolo produced variations of the basic Gran Sport design. In those 32 years Campagnolo was ridden by the winner in 23 of the Tours de France – an incredible record.
