Freesync With 60-80 Fps = Much Worse Input Lag Than No Sync

Imo more games are played at a lower frame rate than a higher one. at 110fps you’re not going to notice much difference. but if the free sync/gsync works in the 30-60 fps range and makes 40 feel like 60 that’s really freaking good.
I have confusion about FREESYNC on FPS Games’s input lag.
I made this video because I wanted to see in depth the gaming difference with and without Freesync. No wonder that the same FPS with Freesync looks like twice as smooth. I love this technology so much that I even capped games like Battlefield which normally you wouldn’t cap. The most shocking thing I wasn’t expecting was actual screen tearing with Vsync enabled. I YouTuber Battle (non)sense decided to test whether there were any differences between running an ASUS VG258Q monitor in FreeSync mode vs. G-Sync mode on NVIDIA and AMD cards. Back in the day, I used to have all these „syncs“ disabled, no frame limiter, and most graphics settings set to the lowest possible to get the maximum fps and the least input delay (I primarily played CSGO). However, I still primarily play FPS games like CS2, COD, Tarkov, etc. But now I have a mu Without FreeSync, there’s too much inverse ghosting when I use the ‘extreme’ overdrive setting to the point where the game just looks terrible. Doesn’t make anything worse or increase input latency vs having it off. I run on PC, RTX 3090, global FPS cap to 117fps and Gsync always on, Vsync off. It’s a far smoother experience than running any other config and I play quite a lot of competitive FPS titles.
Playing CS:GO with Anti-Lag and Enchanced Sync on, ES doing it’s job very well for stop screen tearing and not increasing input lag. My monitor has no FreeSync support.

To answer your question: Yes and no. VSync is only active once you are outside the freesync range, thus there won’t be any double or triple buffering as long as you are within the available freesync range. I dislike vsync as it still introduces the worst input lag for any „sync technology“. If V-Sync does add that much input lag, even with G-Sync, then Borderless Windowed mode is still superior for input lag, even though there a slight decrease in FPS. No one talks about this much, they just say higher refresh rate and higher fps is better, or they say to turn on g sync with v sync and a frame limiter, I tested all combos with that and yes its very smooth but as soon as you enable any form of sync I feel the enemy is always a step ahead of me, and for the record my monitor has low input lag
Does having 60FPS using VRR have lower input lag than 60hz?
40-60FPS with G-Sync still looks very nice. However, the difference between 80-100FPS is still very apparent and much more prefered.
Try to see first and foremost if you can spot tearing on monitor if your games are running at those frames. I believe tearing is more noticeable at 60 Fps and whatnot. What others have suggested, gsync/freesync is a good way to go. I’ve never noticed much input latency no matter the settings, but frame drops and frametime stutters, oh god With G-Sync off it ran 26.3ms of input lag on average, whereas with G-Sync on it ran 28.865ms. Interestingly, this setup was much more consistent than the Freesync monitor, so the difference is more certain.
TLDR: I’ve finally figured out the issue. If you are like me and use a „gsync compatible“ monitor (freesync) then the traditional advice of capping fps -3 and enabling vsync will NOT work for you (well, it will work, but it will add a ton of input lag).

Whereas if you bought a 1080p monitor and ran a higher fps you’d be enjoying less lag and less tearing – but also a worse looking 1080p experience. Contrast that to a native 1440p G-Sync monitor with a Nvidia 10-series card and you’d be enjoying G-Sync whether at 14fps or at 144fps with reduced ghosting, tearing and lag.
Yes, indeed, it’s much easier to just simply use G-SYNC or FreeSync as low-lag fixed-Hz. They’re very forgiving of fluctuations in capping accuracy as the monitors Hz always syncs exactly to the framerate, much easier to make fps exactly equal Hz without needing laggy VSYNC ON. But I’m still curious as to what causes FFB to change at different FPS and settings to V-sync, Freesync and anti-lag. Edit 3: So AMD’s FPS limiter „chill“ works much worse than RTSS.

For 60 FPS, it’s about 16-17ms of frametime, so that’s a very high input lag if you decide to turn on V Sync on any monitor, locked at 60 FPS no matter the game. Screen tear or input lag? If you don’t have a freesync monitor, I suggest you use your 144Hz monitor and nvInspector: use nvInspector to force a „specific“ subdivision of vsync in each game: regular vsync on for games that can maintain 144fps, vsync 1/2 rate for games that can maintain 72fps, vsync 1/3 for 48fps and 1/5 for 36 fps).
My personal recommendation is to just not use V-Sync at all unless a game gives you particular tearing problems. Some people like to use programs like MSI Afterburner to cap the framerate at 59 or 60 fps. This doesn’t have much affect on input
Am I getting input lag by not having my framerate capped below my gsync monitors highest refreshrate? I would only push beyond 165 in overwatch because I play at the most optimal settings for fps no matter what. If my frame rate is almost always above 165 is it a problem? When it comes to a competitive games like overwatch I just want to make sure I’m not putting myself

G-sync always adds input lag. If the framerate hits your monitor’s refresh rate cap then V-sync kicks in and the input lag increases even more. Capping your fps under your display’s max refreshrate can prevent that but the default hit from turning G-sync on is still there.

Input lag is higher at lower frame rates, so even with freesync (or g sync for that matter), 40 fps will not feel like 60 fps unless you have an extremely low sensitivity to input lag. TL;DR: Freesync will make 40 fps MUCH better than 40 fps without Freesync, but it still won’t be just like 60 fps. Wouldn’t a constant 60 fps with Vsync off (presuming the frame times are perfectly even) have exactly the same amount of input lag as a constant 60 fps where Vsync is telling the GPU to hold a frame in the buffer until the monitor is ready?
