Whats the best party members to use?

I went with Afternoon of Darkness as it seems like the cheapest but I’m also hearing it’s the best version of Disgaea 1. I know that for years Afternoon of Darkness was the best way to play 1, it’s portable, and even when it first came out, correct me if I’m wrong but it was even cheaper then Hour of Darkness right?
