About Circles of Stone: Stonehenge and Prehistoric Japan is a new exhibition celebrating the rich culture of prehistoric Japan. Through a number of exquisite objects, some seen for the first time outside of Japan, the exhibition tells the story of Japanese settlements and stone circles of the middle and late Jomon periods, roughly the same time when Stonehenge was built and used. From Japan to Armenia to Portugal, these stone circles may be less famous than Stonehenge, but they’re no less fascinating.

To mark the Solstice, we invite you to take a look at this short film created by our research partner Dr Corey Noxon of the Department of Archaeology at Ritsumeikan University using drone footage taken during study visits to Akita and Hokkaido in the spring and summer of 2022. Circles of Stone: Stonehenge and Prehistoric Japan will tell the story of prehistoric Japan through its settlements and stone circles of the middle and late Jomon periods, the time when Stonehenge was built and used. Oyu Ring Rocks is a large stone arrangement site from the Late Jomon Period located in Towada Oyu, Kazuno, Akita Prefecture. This exhibition tells the story of prehistoric Japan, drawing fascinating and sometimes surprising parallels between stone circles in the Jomon period and Stonehenge. A 5,000 year-old cooking pot stands alongside clay figurines and models of mushrooms among the trove of 80 artefacts brought over from Japan for the exhibition, Circles of Stone. There are also pieces exploring more recent Japanese connections with Stonehenge.

Tuesday 29 August, 2023 About the Conference In conjunction with the exhibition Circles of Stone: Stonehenge and Prehistoric Japan (on show at the Stonehenge Visitor Centre until Sunday 3 September), the Sainsbury Institute and English Heritage are organising a one-day conference at St John’s Place in Salisbury. One of the newly opened Stonehenge exhibitions, the Circles of Stone pays an ode to the rich culture of prehistoric Japan. Housing several prestigious objects, the exhibition takes the visitors on a journey of Japanese settlements and stone circles of the middle and late Jomon period.
