Michael Slote’s very interesting work on moral sentimentalism and moral education raises some important questions on the meaning of empathy, the limitations of ‘inductions’, and the development of moral education from the perspective of care ethics. These questions are addressed in this commentary. Georgetown University Library is in the process of launching a new DigitalGeorgetown platform. Nel Noddings: A Feminine Approach to Moral Education
I begin with a discussion on Noddings’s work on “care” and its leg-acy and influence on the teaching profession. Drawing from the literature of feminist ethics of care, next I turn to look at Nel Noddings’s framework of the “caring relation.” Rather than conceiving of “care” as a virtue, Noddings’s framework locates “care” within the relation between persons, where Nel Noddings, one of the central figures in the contemporary discussion of ethics and moral education, argues that caring–a way of life learned at home–can be extended into a theory that guides social policy. The title of Nel Noddings’ book (published in 1984) is in fact: Caring. A Feminine Approach to Ethics and Moral Education. The book has eight chapters. Broadly speaking chapters 1-3 and 7 focus on caring, chapters 4-6 focus on the ethics of caring and the ethical ideal, and chapter 8 focusses on moral education, although all the chapters make reference to all these

This paper is grounded in a deep appreciation of Nel Noddings’ “ethics of care” as an important contribution to moral philosophy and moral education. We seek to offer some philosophical reflections that have the potential to strengthen this important alternative to mainstream ethics and to how moral education might be conceived and practiced differently. Noddings’s discussion is wide-ranging, as she considers whether organizations, which operate at a remove from the caring relationship, can truly be called ethical. She discusses the extent to which we may truly care for plants, animals, or ideas. Finally, she proposes a realignment of education to encourage and reward not just rationality and trained intelligence, but also

Nel Noddings is arguably one of the premier philosophers of moral education in the English-speaking world today. Although she is outside the mainstream theory, research, and practice traditions of cognitive-developmentalism (the Kohlberg legacy) and of character education (which is in public ascendancy), her body of work is unrivalled for originality of insight,
