Averroes, Precursor Of The Enlightenment ? Charles Butterworth

Di: Ava

Muslim philosopher Ibn Rushd (1126-1198), known in the West as Averroes, may be viewed as a medieval precursor of the European Enlightenment and as a rallying point for dialogue between East and West. Averroes“s attempt to harmonize philosophy and religion, reason and faith, led to a rethinking of the tenets of Christianity. The trajectory of these Golden Age scholars’ writings was espe-cially broad. Not only did they engage in political philosophy, but they also were deeply interested in metaphysics, ethics, biology, and medi-cine. Charles Butterworth published an article in 1996 actually titled, “Averroës, Precursor of the Enlightenment?” The early Islamic philos-ophers even were concerned about Charles Butterworth, “Averroës, Precursor of the Enlightenment?”, Alif: Journal of Comparative Poetics 16 (1996), 6-18; Goffredo Quadri, La Philosop-hie Arabe Dans L’europe Médiévale: Des Origines À Averroès (Payot, 1947), 198; Stefan Wild, “Islamic Enlightenment and the Paradox of Averroes”, Die Welt des Islams 36/3 (1996), 379

Abstract Though much has been written of late about Averroes and his philosophy, little attention has been paid to his political teaching. Generally speaking, his works can be divided into two categories: commentaries on Aristotle and other important thinkers and occasional treatises written to resolve particular questions. The subject of this essay, his political teaching, is stated

Averroes, Precursor of the Enlightenment ? بواسطة: Butterworth, Charles E. منشور: (1998) Universität Leipzig, Institut für Philosophie Email: [email protected] Abstract. Both Arabic modernists and Western humanists often regard the Muslim philosopher Averroes as one of the earliest precursors of Kant and the European En-lightenment. In contrast to this reputation, this paper argues that it was Kant’s critics Herder and Tiedemann who rediscovered Averroes.

As he notes, with admirable finesse, there are recent historical reasons for some to have pursued that path. But, and here we are in agreement, it does not bear fruit.
