Avatar Really Just Pocahontas?
Di: Ava
Think about the characters. Milo and Jake, Quaritch and Rourke, Neitiri and Kida, the king of Atlantis and the tribal chief in Avatar, the crystal of Atlantis and the goddess of Pandora. There’s too many similarities. As for Pocahontas, I con’t think the two films are comparable because Pocahontas is an anti-tribalism film about two different groups of people seeing beyond their I just don’t understand how these films are the only movies to get criticism for the story being simple. I mean really most movies have simple stories, you can almost always predict the ending. Yet when it comes to Avatar everyone acts like every other movie is Memento. Its just a weird hive mind effect I guess. themovieblog.com
Pocahontas is the first project I worked on when I started at Disney in 1994. So it always reminds me of that time in my life and how inspired I was at that young age.
Avatar: just like Pocahontas
Did you know that James Cameron’s Avatar is just Disney’s Pochontas in disguise? Of course, this isn’t very surprising. If you know anything about screenwriting or storytelling, than you know

You would think a science fiction/action-adventure movie that is literally the highest grossing movie of all-time would have spawned a rabid fanbase eager to get their hands on any pieces of that universe (whether depictions in literature, games, even art), or just fan fiction in general, but Avatar doesn’t seem to have any sort of dedicated fanbase.
The groundbreaking film Avatar shared uncanny similarities with The Last Samurai and Pocahontas. Despite narrative tropes, Avatar’s visuals, world-building, and themes made it a commercial hit. Criticisms about a „white savior“ trope and cultural appropriation were common across Avatar, The Last Samurai, and Pocahontas.
For example, major similarities between the two films Pocahontas and Avatar, (reproduced in Figure 3 from themovieblog.com (Anonymous 2010)) were not considered plagiarism, although it may well be argued that the ‘idea’ in Avatar is so similar to that in Pocahontas, and so lacking in novelty that it could (should?) be considered plagiarism „The CG was amazing!“ „Yeah but the plot was just pocahontas/dances with wolves/the last samurai/etc/etc in space.“ The end. I’m not an even an Avatar hater but you have to admit that’s kinda unusual. Dune 2 is just Avatar with sand. Avatar is just Pocahontas in space. Pocahontas is just Dance with Wolves animated. Sure, and the Lion King is just Hamlet with talking animals in the African Savannah. But I think that a lot of the backslash comes from people hyping Avatar about stuff outside of the visual aspect. Also James Cameron blowing his own horn about how complex the Avatar plot is and how deep the Avatar characters are really doesn’t help As has been written about previously (hundreds of times), the story of Avatar is recycled from multiple sources, such as the real-life story of Pocahontas and the movies Ferngully and Dances with Wolves.

Click for larger image There are similar images for other movies (this guy has a bunch of them), such as Harry Potter vs. Star Wars, but in my opinion the Avatar / Pocahontas parallels take the cake. Justifiable Criticism? Most critics have hailed Avatar as a stunning achievement in special effects. Coherence was filmed on an absolutely miniscule budget, shot over the span of a few days in the director’s house, with actors who had never met and mostly just had improv backgrounds. In fact, a lot of the movie is improvised. He basically invited 8 actors to his house, without really any crew, kept them in the dark about what he was doing and ended up with something fresh and unique. So I know this comparison gets brought up a LOT, so apologies for just kind of rehashing. But wondering how fellow fans respond to this constant criticism. I went with my friend the other day (this was my third viewing, and this was their first) and before the movie started she was kind of just like, “yeah I wasn’t into the first, it was obviously just blue Pocahontas” And of course I

So really clear demands or just connecting the whole thing back to Land Back priorities would make a lot of sense to me. But as a non-Indigenous person who happens to be adjacent to and sometimes advocating directly with Native communities I want to be mindful of not speaking for folks where it’s not my place to do so. From fellow sci-fi films like Interstellar to animated films with similar themes like Pocahontas, Avatar fans have plenty of options. Sure, Avatar is „Pocahontas in Space“, and a „sequel“ to FernGully and Dances with Wolfes, and a „ripoff“ of Delgo, but it’s also as mindblowing as seeing a completely new color for the first time. Like Avatar, it’s set in the 2100s and includes a forested planet called Pandora that’s home to dangerous wildlife. However, this is really the only overlap. Avatar: Directed by James Cameron. Pocahontas comparison: how to respond
Genre is not all that defines what type of a movie a movie is. The character arcs, general plotting and structure, and themes of Avatar and Dances With Wolves/ Pocahontas are remarkably similar. Basically if you stripped the three films down to their barest components such as setting, the movies would be remarkably similar.
They both look beautiful, there’s no doubting that it’s simply fact. But story wise , I just think they are both incredibly boring. I mean the first one was literally just Pocahontas, and I really wanted to like the second, I went into it with high hopes and an open mind. But I was just bored watching it and I didn’t find any Music video/Film review. All about the similarities between Avatar and Pocahontas, two films that display indigenous people as mystical, exotic and clueless, Matt Bateman | Avatar or Pocahontas? Matt Bateman’s late-night joke went viral and incurred the wrath of James Cameron.
James Cameron deserves credit for pushing cinematic technology forward. But does Avatar really have a story worth remembering? Why does everyone say Avatar ripped off Pocahontas? Every time you have a conversation with someone about Avatar they always say it ripped off Pocahontas but really it was Atlantis. Pocahontas is obviously the more popular movie so it makes sense people would say that.
